Planning
Problem/Goal
We did not have an effective way to track student progress within our program, and the methods we had previously tried either did not scale well or were not user-friendly. As a result, we needed a tool that could help us monitor student progress and predict when students might be ready for an apprenticeship.
Objective
Provide a tool that could track student progress in a centralized, user-friendly manner rather than relying on locally stored data. The tool also needed to support custom formulas that would help us predict when students might be ready for an apprenticeship.

Design Process
With this project, I wanted to find a tool that would allow us to track student progress throughout their time in the MCRI program. We needed a solution that was intuitive, familiar, and accessible to anyone who needed it at any given time. We also needed the tool to help us predict when students would be ready for an apprenticeship so that we could better plan with our employer partners.
Using the RIPPLES model, I determined that Google Sheets was the best fit because it was a tool that my MCRI facilitators were already familiar with, or at least familiar with the concept of using a spreadsheet. Additionally, Google Sheets allowed us to incorporate formulas that could be developed with assistance from ChatGPT to help generate predicted completion dates based on the average amount of time it takes students to complete the various phases of our program.
Reflection
This project was a lot of fun to build because we had been actively trying to find a solution to this problem for several years. It gave me the opportunity to set aside dedicated time to explore different options, test potential solutions, and simultaneously fulfill a course requirement. I have also historically struggled with creating formulas in spreadsheet tools, so being able to work with ChatGPT to test and refine formulas until they produced the desired output was a huge win for me.
Today, this project is used daily by my facilitators at the MCRI and has continued to evolve since its initial implementation. We have added additional columns and data points to improve the formulas and increase the accuracy of our predictions regarding when students are ready for an apprenticeship.
